Expense Split Calculator

Use this free expense split calculator to divide costs for trips, dinners, dates, shared apartment bills, and group activities. It handles standard equal splits, but it also supports more realistic situations where one person covers a fixed percentage and the rest of the group shares whatever is left. Once the expenses are entered, the calculator shows who paid, who owes, and the cleanest way to settle up.

How the math works

Formula

Owedᵢ = T × sᵢ, Netᵢ = Paidᵢ − Owedᵢ

  • TTotal shared expenses entered in the calculator
  • sᵢPerson i share of the total, expressed as a decimal or percentage allocation
  • OwedᵢWhat person i should cover under the selected split
  • PaidᵢWhat person i actually paid across all entered expenses
  • NetᵢPositive means they should receive money back; negative means they owe money

Plain English

The calculator first determines each person’s fair share percentage. Fixed percentages are applied directly, and anyone left blank splits the remaining percentage equally. It then compares each person’s actual payments with what they should have covered. If Alex paid $300 but their fair share was $180, Alex should receive $120 back. If Sam paid $40 but owed $110, Sam should reimburse $70. The settlement step then matches people who owe money with people who should receive money until the balances net to zero.

How to use this calculator

  1. 1

Add each person in the group and leave a share blank for anyone who should split the remaining percentage equally.

  2. 2

Enter each expense and select who actually paid for it so the calculator can track real cash outflows.

  3. 3

Review each person’s fair share, balance, and recommended reimbursements, then export the result if you want a record to share.

Why this number matters

Shared spending gets messy fast when one person pays for the hotel, another covers dinner, and someone in the group should pay more or less than an equal split. A good expense split calculator removes awkward math, makes reimbursements transparent, and gives everyone a clean settlement plan without needing a spreadsheet.

What this calculator helps you answer

  • How do we split a weekend trip when one person should cover 40% and everyone else splits the remaining 60%?
  • Who owes whom after multiple people paid for different parts of a dinner, concert, date night, or bachelor trip?
  • What is the cleanest reimbursement plan with the fewest transfers after a shared trip or group outing?

Frequently asked questions

How does the calculator handle mixed percentages and equal splits?+

It first applies any fixed percentages you enter. Whatever remains from 100% is then divided equally across the people whose share field is left blank.

Can I use this for more than two people?+

Yes. You can add as many people as you need, which makes it useful for trips, group dinners, roommates, and shared events.

Does the calculator tell me who should reimburse whom?+

Yes. After comparing each person’s actual payments against their fair share, it generates a settlement plan showing who should pay whom and how much.

Can I export the expense split results?+

Yes. The calculator supports exporting the result so you can keep a record of the expenses, balances, and suggested settlements or share it with the group.
